Childhood Dream Job #6
11/06/2009

I dreamt of being a lot of things when I was younger. The world had so much potential and I could’ve been anything. Some days I was. When I played with all my friends and I was anything and everything. I was a doctor, zombie, pirate and everything in-between. Some things seemed to stick in my head over the years, and were’nt just empty wishes, but actual possibilities. I’ve learned to never quit dreaming, because each day has just as much potential as it did then.
This is #6 on my countdown of my Top 10 Childhood Dream Jobs.
Actor
He’s a Character.
I’ve been told that my entire life. That I was a character. I don’t know which character of what story, but supposedly I’m a character.
My teachers, parents, friends, and scores of other people have told me I’m just a character. This seems to fit me. I kinda always wanted to be an actor on in the inside. Because to me, almost everything is a show. The idea that the world is my stage was always something I seemed to grasp. There was always the guy that was trying to make people laugh and be in the middle. That was me.
After realizing a few things about my social habits and being branded “that guy” I found other outlets for these habits. I found that the stage was a place that this kind of activity was completely OK. I’ve done musical theatre, regular theatre, and other things that I guess you could constitute as acting.
It was a good fit. I could be the crazy guy on stage, because that was the right place for it, but outside of that I was the cool and suave fellow. Well as cool and suave as I’ve ever been.
There is a certain thrill that I get from acting, or from performing. My favorite thing is doing something that makes people laugh, and takes them to a place that they’ve never been to before. That, I finally realized, was the real reason I enjoyed acting so much. It was because I loved to put on a show and create a character, act or something that was entertaining.
There was something we used to say before we did any play, and many actors know it. We would cross our arms and grab hands. Then we would say: ” There is magic in the theatre and the theatre is magic and truly blessed are those who are able to share their talents with others” Then we would kick one leg forward and yell, “Break a leg” while simultaneously turning around. I miss those days
Theatre people and Baseball players are the most superstitious people, but I’m only a little ’stitious’.
Now…
I still enjoy doing something that takes me outside of myself. I think that’s the draw for most people that act or do drama. They like to find roles that are so outside of themselves that they get to stretch themselves.
I still think that if something came up I’d be able to act again. I wish i had more outlets for it now, and I had the time. Maybe someday I’ll get to.
There’s no such thing as a small part, just small actors.
